Have you ever wondered what it's like working somewhere?
I might be able to tell you....

This is a summary of all the places I've worked in the last decade. You can decide whether I'm really bad at jobs or really good at interviews. Maybe it's both.

Workplace 30 - Starry Starry Night

Jingle Bells Jingle Bells Jingle All the waaaaaaay!

Now that you’re in the mood, let me tell you about a Christmas gig I had a few years back.
The LORD MAYORS CAROLS. (He gets capitals for being Lord Mayor)
So one of the managers from Easterfest also works on the Lord Mayors Carols and hooked me up as their Executive Assistant.

It was fun but hectic. The LMC have some fantastic aspects that I had had no idea about previously. They run a talent competition called the Christmas Star and the winner gets to perform at the LMC and also gets to record at Hammered Silver studios – huge prize. They also run a preview performance for sick kids from hospitals around the city and bring a stella line up of performers to Brisbane in the crazy busy December period. And the whole team does this around their normal jobs!

I understand how you would think that the Lord Mayor’s Carols would be organised by the Lord Mayors office but, at least when I was involved, they were organised by a team of dedicated and talented individuals, who give their time and skills to make sure this beautiful event comes together.
So my task was to be the admin support for the team. When they had meetings, I took minutes and when they needed things researched or letter written or… anything that they didn’t have time to do – that was me. It was crazy hectic supporting a team of people around my own full time job but enjoyable.

Memorable points:
  • Getting to stay at Royal on the Park – I need to find more gigs where I get put up for the weekend
  • If you ever get the opportunity to work with Guy Sebastion – Don’t.. Massive pain and cause of the most stress out of the whole event.
  • The tryouts for the Christmas Star competition was AMAZING! Hundreds of such talented individuals and groups. I wish I still had the contacts of some of them and I hope they are still pursuing their singing career. Would love to be able to see that again.
  • The Tabernacle Church in Brisbane was the base for most of the meetings and it is a beautiful old church, I loved going there.
  • Driving around to every IGA in SE QLD to drop off promotional banners that required a PHD to put together. (IGA are the major sponsor of the LMC)
  • Working at Brisbane Riverstage – a great venue. Would love to do more there.
  • My Mum and Dad being the drivers for the artists. I LOVE having my family involved in events I’m doing. It’s always a better experience for them being there.

In summary, this is a fantastic event, with reeeeally talented people running it and you should get involved. If you’re into events, volunteer to help; if you’re an artist of any sort, try out for the competition; if you just like pretty sounds and sights, go along to it. But take an umbrella.
